It is with great satisfaction that the issuance of the first operational license for the Collective System for the Management of Household-Origin Pharmaceutical Products under the trade name MediCycle, owned by Green Dot (Cyprus) Public Co Ltd, is announced. The System was established based on the 2023 Waste Management (Household-Origin Pharmaceutical Products) Regulations (K.D.P 80/2023), which stipulates the obligation of pharmaceutical product importers and manufacturers to manage the waste from household-origin pharmaceutical products in an environmentally responsible manner across the entire territory of Cyprus.
The operational license for MediCycle was signed on June 14, 2024, by the Honorable Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, Dr. Maria Panayiotou, and is valid until March 31, 2030.
MediCycle’s primary objective is the collection and management of unsuitable pharmaceutical products generated by households. For this purpose, special bins will be gradually placed in pharmacies in coordination with the Cyprus Pharmaceutical Association. The first placements are estimated to begin with October 2024.
Citizens will soon have the opportunity to dispose of expired or unsuitable pharmaceutical products in these special bins. Through this process, the pollution of the ecosystem by pharmaceutical substances, which until now ended up in general waste bins or drains with serious negative impacts on the environment and human health, will be significantly reduced.
